November 10, 2008 - Archer Geographic, a provider of diversified geographic information, mapping services, and satellite imagery, has announced the formation of its Marine Services business unit to formalize and expand its service of marine markets. The new Marine Services business unit will be housed in the near term within Archer Geographic's satellite imaging center in downtown Madison, Wisconsin.

Archer Geographic has served marine markets since its foundation in 1998, but the new business unit will concentrate and develop company resources to more effectively serve marine clients. "With the recent launch of the Geoeye-1 satellite, and the anticipated launch of Geoeye-2, our ability to conduct detailed coastal and shallow water surveys using satellite remote sensing is more complete," stated Brad Votava, Managing Partner. The spatial resolution of the Geoeye satellites is the highest commercially available at 50cm, and the spectral information obtained by these satellites allows for greater marine utility than previously available. "We are especially excited about the increased spectral capabilities for marine applications of the Geoeye-2 satellite," planned for launch in 2009.

Global demand for the mapping and monitoring of coastlines and shallow water areas continues to grow, while the high costs of mobilizing on-site survey crews is often prohibitive, particularly to more remote areas. The satellite remote sensing services offered by Archer Geographic through its new Marine Services business unit provide cost effective initial site surveys for many coastal and marine applications.

January 3, 2008 – DigitalGlobe, of Longmont, Colo., announced that WorldView-1 has reached full operating capability for all customers. The WorldView-1 satellite successfully launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base on September 18, 2007 and is the most agile satellite ever flown commercially. The high-capacity, panchromatic imaging system features half-meter resolution imagery, the highest resolution available on the commercial market. WorldView-1 has an average revisit time of 1.7 days and is capable of collecting up to 290,000 square miles per day of half-meter imagery. The satellite will also be equipped with state-of-the-art geo-location accuracy capabilities and will exhibit stunning agility with rapid targeting and efficient in-track stereo collection.

"The WorldView-1 satellite marks another advance in imaging technology, providing another significant source of image evidence for our clients," said Brad Votava, Director of the Satellite Image Evidence (SIE) Group at Archer Geographic. "The detail of the imagery coupled with the satellite's quick revisit time make it a potentially new powerful source of image evidence in current and future litigation," Votava added. "The addition of WorldView-1 to the constellation of currently operating imaging satellites only serves to further the mission of the SIE Group." WorldView-2, an even more technically advanced satellite system, is scheduled for launch in 2008.

October 1, 2007 – Archer Geographic, a Madison, Wisc. based provider of diversified geographic information, mapping services, and satellite imagery, has announced the formation of the Satellite Image Evidence (SIE) Group. The SIE Group has been established to serve attorneys and the legal industry in utilizing satellite imagery as evidence in the courtroom and in support of various legal actions.

Satellite remote sensing has long been the domain of the military and intelligence gathering agencies, but has in recent years become more commercial. “It is to the point today, with the amazing detail and continuous availability of satellite imagery, that the technology is analogous to a security camera mounted in space,” remarked Brad Votava, the founder of the SIE Group. “It offers an almost completely untapped resource for attorneys and legal professionals as a source of critical evidence in many cases.”

Applications of satellite image evidence include criminal and accident cases, environmental and energy law, insurance claims, toxic tort, and litigation arising from disasters, as well as cases involving property disputes, land use/zoning, and many other areas of law. “The types of cases that can benefit from satellite image evidence are numerous and very diverse,” commented Votava. “In those cases to date where it has been utilized, the image evidence has been extremely effective in helping secure favorable verdicts. In fact, due to the persuasive nature of the evidence, many cases have been settled out of court largely due to the satellite image evidence.”

The SIE Group is believed to be the first of its kind in the country. “As the acceptance of this new source of evidenciery material continues to grow in the legal industry, we intend to continue to grow the SIE Group into a national, even international network of professionals,” said Votava.  “As the technology continues to develop, the potential benefit to our legal system is virtually limitless.”
